Vancouver's broken social scene?
Calling all Vancouver peoples...
This is not my own question (I live here), but a question I'm copying/pasting from another user from another message board I use, as I'm curious what your answers would be. The
vancouver community is highly opinionated, so I figure this would be excellent food for thought! What do you think?

I'm in my early 20's and I plan on moving to the Seattle area. I have a degree in Communication and while the main reason I'm moving to Seattle is b/c of the higher pay (and free housing since I have relatives there I can stay with while going for my Masters and working to save money for when I decide where I really want to live afterwards), I also wanted to live near the city b/c I was hoping for an excellent social life and night life that I can't get in Appalachia.
While I haven't moved to Seattle yet, I did learn that basically the people in Seattle are not nearly as social as I hoped. While they will act nice, supposedly they prefer to be in their own cliques or it takes you forever to get them to hang out with you. I was wondering how the social scene was in Vancouver.
I know in Toronto I was able to go up to people and make some friends. Montreal was insanely social and people were practically your friends from the get-go (at least that's how it was with me). Northeast England was pretty friendly too, but I know there are places like NYC where the people seemed pretty rude to me. I was wondering if I could build connections and have a better chance at socializing with people in Vancouver or are they more like people in Seattle and NYC? I won't be going up there every weekend, just once in a while to hang out and/or to escape the anti-socialness of Seattle if it really is as anti-social as they warn me.
Also, do they have a good clubbing scene? Especially clubs that play rock/dance/techno music instead of just hip-hop or gothic? Is it moderately safe to walk around Vancouver (or around the same safeness as Toronto or Montreal) or is it more like some of the other U.S. cities where just being a female after midnight is a huge risk?
For the original posting: here it is.

Recommending a Good Bank
I'm planning on starting at UBC in January 2009 and was wondering if anyone had experience with setting up a bank account in Canada. On CIC's Web site they give a listing of various banks, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good one for a student at UBC living on, or hopefully, near campus. Vancity seems to be a pretty good one based on their Web site. Anyone know if there's a bank on-campus?
Also, does anyone know if I could get a Canadian VISA (credit card)? I've heard that my credit score in the US does not transfer into other countries (not that it's terrible or anything), but I'm thinking that if I'm going to spend a few years in BC, and will probably charging a few things, I'd rather set up a local account versus get hit again and again with international fees.
Any help would greatly be appreciated!
Thanks!

Where are some places were someone can buy real (not fake) Birkenstocks in this city? Bonus points if you know of somewhere that sells them cheap.
Thank you!

Fun on Wednesdays and Thursdays
Hello Vancouver!!
So my current (crappy) job gives me Thursdays and Fridays off and every once in a while I feel like getting shit-canned in order to deal with my failures in life. So, I ask you: Where are some fun places to go on Wednesdays and Thursday nights?
I have heard there is some karaoke at the Legion on Main Street on Wednesdays and something about the Cellar on Thursdays?? but otherwise I'm at a loss.
I'm looking for laid back places to get drinks and dance. I'm into more old rock, metal, punk, and some top 40 but definitely not into electro-house kind of stuff.
Oh, and preferably downtownish...

Sushi is freaking delicious.<br /><br /
Sushi is freaking delicious.
Ridiculous, shameless, rump-shaking party music is fun.
SAKE BOMB! FRIDAYS
When: Fridays, 7-11pm. In other words, prime warm-up time for your late night adventuring.
Where: The Eatery, 3431 west broadway
What: Dirty, filthy, shameless mashup, a little techno and a whole lot of absolutely mind-meltingly good sushi.
Who: Resident DJs Abasi, Crown Vic, Glyn, Dave Dirk and a whole cast of random musical guests.
Come down.
Eat sushi.
Eat six orders of that ridiculous tuna tempura.
Rock the f*ck out.

mexican restaurants
where is good mexican food to be had?
as per usual, i have specific criteria (aside from delicious comestibles):
- somewhere in burnaby would be ideal, but vancouver proper is fine as well
- a dine-in place, as opposed to take-out
- getting a table there on a friday evening isn't impossible (and if they get busy, then they take reservations)
- must have a good selection of both veggie and meatatarian dishes
- they don't skimp on the booze in their margaritas
- bonus points if they put cilantro in their (freshly-made) salsa

office BBQ
My company is planning on having a BBQ and they left me the planning. Two questions:
1. Since we are downtown it will be in Stanley park, however, where in the park do you advise is the best spot, preferably close to a bathroom (I don’t know Stanley park that well).
so far here is the list of things that I can think of to bring. Please advise if I am missing anything.
21. plates – 40 plates
22. cups – 40
23. pop – 4 bottles, 2 cola, 1 7-up and other.
24. juice – apple and orange
25. water – bottles, pack of 12
26. alcohol – you decide, I don’t know much about that…beer is always good.
27. chips – Plain & Dorritos
28. buns – 2 pks of 24
29. hot dogs – 2 pks of 24
30. cookies – a few
31. cupcakes (made by me) – 12 (not that many eat cupcakes)
32. table clothes – 2
33. napkins – lots or we can take some from the washroom (kidding)
34. forks & knives – 1 box of each
35. BBQ and flippers
36. ketchup
37. mustard
38. relish
39. cooler
40. ice

Do you have Fancy Pants Potential?
Hi there Vancouver LJers. I'm looking to found a skit comedy troupe and I'm looking for funny people. People who love comedy. People who are devotees of The Frantics, Kids in the Hall, Mister Show, and/or Monty Python. People who are into comedy like nuns are into religion, like vultures are into carrior, like geeks are into Linux.
Yes, ladies and gentle men, I'm looking for comedy geeks!
Why am I looking for comedy geeks? Is it idle curiousity? Bizarre fetishism? The first stage of a diabolical plot to create an unstoppable army of Python-quoting, Arrested Development-loving, Jon Stewart worshipping ninja wizard clone warriors?
Uh, no. I just want writer/performers for a skit comedy troupe. You really should get out more.
Why writer/performers, you say, instead of writers and performers? In short, because all the great teams have been writer/performers. in long, well, click here.
So this is your chance, Vancouver, to get in on thr ground floor of a grand band of lunatics who are determined to make hilarious skit comedy and show the world that it's still possible, despite the lack of decent skitcom out there in TV land! Our ambition is to create incredibly good skits for Internet distribution, in hopes of developing our skills and attracting enough buzz for our real goal, which is to have our own TV skit comedy show. On real actual television! Or barring that, cable.
If you're interested, check out out website, www.fancypantsclub.com. If you'd like to know more about us, click here. If you want to know just what kind of weirdo we're looking for, click here , oh, and here .
And if, despite what you've read here and on the website, you will want to join, you can fill out an application form here.
Come join us, you wacky Vancouvites. It's warm, wild, and weird in here!

Looking for a dress maker
I've just had an absolutely Lovely skirt ruined at the tailors, unwearable and unfixable. But I adore the print and it's super rare to find again. Not to mention expensive.
So I need to find a competent, highly skilled, dress maker who will be capable of turning my skirt into a printed boarder for a sundress. I sew myself and design so I am insanely picky. I'd do it myself but I'm still learning and my skills aren't perfect yet.
http://pupe.jp/item/ZiZtWU4g6qtE/ the skirt in questioned before the great butchering.
Anyone have any recomendations?

I'm looking for a running club in East Van that works with kids (grade 5 if it matters). I've googled it and all I can find is Point Grey and West Vancouver at 4 pm, which is just not going to happen.

Athletic Facilities @ UBC (Weight Room & Pool)
I know someone already posted about swimming pools in Vancouver, but I was wondering if anyone knew about the swimming conditions, and the weight room, over at UBC. I've seen photos online and the pool is LOVELY!
I'm considering joining the master swim club (I think they meet in the mornings), but I wanted to see if anyone had any advice about that or anything else (e.g. best times to lift weights, swim aside from MS, the attitude of other patrons, etc.)
Thanks!
