Richards and Chan is glad to take on the challenge of assisting Babz in her battle against cancer along with Givemeaning.com.
Roland, Boris and I are pleased to announce the new design of Urban Vancouver by Vancouver-based Bright Creative's Dave Shea. We are excited that Dave, one of the most respected web designers in the world, produced such a wonderful-looking layout.
In the top right, beneath the logo, are tabs for the Urban Vancouver about page, a link to edit your account info, and a link to contact us. The colour scheme for the site is blue and green, reflecting the colour of the sky and ocean as well as the trees and mountains that surround Vancouver, as well as some "pinky red" (to use Dave's phrasing), which represents the Vancouver area's spring blossoms. The photo in the left top corner and the logo in the top left corner feature two of Vancouver's most recognizable buildings, BC Place stadium and the sails of Canada Place respectively.
There are still some bugs to work out, e.g. the right sidebar sometimes obscuring large photos, as well as some other minor details; this is still an ongoing and iterative process. There will be some more changes coming in the future, as Urban Vancouver has been developing in the open since April, and the new design is a major step forward in that development. That said, we very much welcome feedback about the new layout and we look forward to making a great design even better.
A very quick post to announce that rich text editing is now enabled for those people using Internet Explorer or a Mozilla browser to view this site. A lot of us are Safari users, so hopefully we can get that working as well.
I'll be adding a How To with some specific instructions, but everything should pretty much "just work". Image uploads work (choose a category at right) -- these images will appear in your personal gallery. Image insertion (adding images to your postings) needs some work and is "coming soon".
Ross Laird is Urban Vancouver's newest contributor. I'm going to take the easy way out and just quote from his About page:
Ross A. Laird is an interdisciplinary scholar and creative artist. He is a best-selling author, psychotherapist, university professor, addictions specialist, poet, and craftsman in wood and stone. Whether he's giving a keynote address at a psychology conference, working with heroin addicts in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, or discussing his ideas about creativity on radio and television, Laird offers a unique blend of the arts and sciences. He is a storyteller, a philosopher, and an engaging speaker.
Ross will be writing some longer pieces for Urban Vancouver, and might even post to his blog on occasion. His column (for want of a better word) can be found in our new features section.
When he's not posting to Urban Vancouver, he can find Ross's home site at www.rosslaird.info.
Welcome, Ross — we're looking forward to some good stories.

As you may or may not have noticed, we completed a server move today. Things were fairly seamless (thanks, Ben), but let us know if you see anything that doesn't work.
Err...yes, we know about Contact Us not getting to us, and the loss of post counts next the neighbourhoods and topics. And the Vancouver Blogs block not displaying on the front page. Fairly seamless.
Some new features are being tested and being turned on over the weekend, along with some How-Tos. Stay tuned!
The poll on which party people will be voting for has been archived in our polls section (and is part of our 2004 election special report).
The poll is still open (we will generally run polls for 1 - 2 weeks), so feel free to go and cast your vote — it will remain open until June 9th.
I debated posting a poll asking what the next poll will be. Feel free to leave a comment on this article suggesting something, or post to the poll suggestions forum.
Our conditions are pretty simple: no profanity, disrespect or commercials: if you violate these terms and conditions we will delete the offending material without warning.
Check out the Terms and Conditions page for full details.
Registered members (you can create an account if you don't have one already) now have the ability to add their own events. They get listed automatically in the events block on the right hand side of the front page, as well as being added to the neighbourhood feeds.
This was prompted by me creating an event for JustSue's Yard Sale that's coming up tomorrow (Saturday, May 8).
As always, please use the Contact Us page or the forum to leave us feedback.
I wanted to point out that we've had our first external image addition. Check out Arash Eftekhari's personal image gallery (you can check out his local user profile). He's got a great picture of some West End buildings on a foggy Vancouver day.
Every member account on Urban Vancouver can upload as many as 25 images of up to a couple of megabytes in size. By default, they show up in your personal image gallery, which is accessible from your user profile.
I've also added Arash's blog to the local feeds. Arash immigrated to Canada in June of last year -- hope to see more from you here on Urban Vancouver, Arash!
