Where does the RSS live?

By kk on June 13, 2005 - 1:20pm

Looks to me like we're missing a link to our RSS/XML feed somewhere here on UrbanVancouver.com.

Bloglines finds it automagically for me, but maybe we should call it out.

Olympic Logo Failing to Win Friends in B.C.

By kk on May 12, 2005 - 9:33pm

Here's another interesting article (with some good comments on the bottom of the page) about a poll that was taken of "British Columbians" to measure peoples reaction to new Olympics emblem. I've emailed the author to see if we can take a look at the poll too. Interesting that the results are not dissimilar from the results of our poll on the new 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics logo, Ilanaaq.

Olympic logo failing to win friends in B.C.
Half of those polled like Ilanaaq, but two in five dislike it

A poll shows that just under half of British Columbians want to befriend Ilanaaq, the 2010 Olympics logo.

"It shows that a lot of the negative discussion about the logo has had an impact," said Evi Mustel, of Mustel Group Market Research.

When the logo was revealed with much fanfare on April 23, it immediately drew criticism for what many felt was a simplistic design.

A member of the Squamish First Nation labelled it an act of aggression because the stylized Inukshuk is a symbol of the Inuit, an aboriginal people foreign to B.C.

UPDATED: After a little back and forth with David, I was able to track down some additional information about the poll that was conducted. Here's some of the results.

I'm still trying to figure out how many people were sampled. What they were asked? etc. It would be insightful to get a look at the research report done by Evi Mustel.

RONA Sponsors the Vancouver Olympics, Deal Valued at $75M

By kk on May 5, 2005 - 10:08am

Yesterday Roland and I attended the announcement of the new partnership between RONA home stores and Vancouver 2010 Olympics. The Olympic logo designers were there as well as some local VANOC people, some RONA big-wigs, some Canadian athletes, and the media.

The 2 most interesting parts of the announcement in my opinion were, a) the news that the sponsoship cost RONA $75 million dollars, and b) talking to the Canada Olympic athletes from past games that were there (especially Kelly Smith and Ross MacDonald).

Here are a couple photos from the event. The rest of the photos can be found here. I've also posted the media announcement details below so you can see some of the information surrounding the contract. One thing that surprised me about it all was as a percentage what a small part actually goes to the athletes and communities.... 10% or less.

Toke The Vote Rally - BC Marijuana Party

By kk on April 21, 2005 - 9:19am

There is a provincial election coming up here in BC in the next few weeks. I'm new to Canada, but it's definately not the same political environment as the States. To begin with there is no two-party system. There are tons of parties... some major and some minor. One of the newer parties is the BC Marijuana Party and they held their "Toke the Vote" party on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery today. Shane, Richard and I work in an office close to the VAG and decided to head down and take some photos and check out the speeches. Here's a sample of them and you can find the rest of them here.

Vancouver Sun Run Photos

By kk on April 17, 2005 - 12:11pm

I braved the cold and rain today to get up early and shoot the start of the Vancouver Sun Run this morning. Note to self: request a media pass next time. I got stuck behind a big metal barrier and didn't have much of an angle on the more interesting shots. Anyway, I had fun and a couple of the shots turned out. Here's some of them and the rest can be found here. I'm going to have a warm bath and see if I can get my lips to stop being blue.

Yahoo! Buys Vancouver Darling Flickr

By kk on March 20, 2005 - 2:09pm

Well, looks like we were in fact onto something.

Congrats to the Ludicorp team! I hope this works out great for you all and the users/fans of Flickr. It’s cool to see good things happen to good people.

Yahoo actually does acquire Flickr

Holy smokes, SOMEBODY out there is bad at keeping secrets!! Yes! We can finally confirm that Yahoo has made a definitive agreement to acquire Flickr and us, Ludicorp. Smack the tattlers and pop the champagne corks!

Woohoo! What does this mean? It means that we’ll no longer have to draw straws to see who gets paid, schedule conjugal visits between trips to the colo….wait! That’s not what you want to know. This is what you want to know:

What is going to happen to Flickr?

Flickr will be continuing on the path it’s on — to Flickr 1.0 and beyond. We’ll be working with a bunch of people that Totally Get Flickr and want to preserve the community and the flavor of what is here. We’re going to grow and change, but we’re in it for the long haul, with the same management and same team.

You’re not going to become a bunch of suits?

No, no, no! The precious DNA we’ve got — that of the Ludicrew — are on side and revving up for building Flickr. Having the team building out the team’s vision for Flickr has been stressed as our number one priority, and keeping us around — in spite of our wiseassery, tomfoolery and tendency to hoot spontaneously — is crucial for preserving the Flickrness that is Flickr. They’re not going to replace any of us with suits, nor induce us to wear them. Lapel? I don’t know what you mean.

Vancouver Tries Free Heroin Program

By kk on March 12, 2005 - 11:07am

Found this interesting post come across my feedreader this morning. It's definately a difficult issue. I'm not averse to providing a safe place and help to addicts in principle, but I wonder... is this my income tax dollars that are going to buy heroin for junkies? If so, I think my money could probably be better spent.

Vancouver Tries Free Heroin Program
Saturday, March 12, 2005

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Just over the United States northwest border, addicts will soon be able to get their fix from the Canadian government in the form of free heroin administered by nurses and doctors on the taxpayer’s dime.

“They’re using heroin. They’ll continue to use heroin. What we’re trying to do is prevent them from getting something irreversible like HIV, hep [hepatitis] C and overdose death,

Man it was windy this afternoon....

By kk on February 4, 2005 - 9:05pm

Today at about 4pm it was so windy in Stanley Park, I saw 2 guys SURFING on the 2-3 foot waves that were rolling in over in the south western beaches of the park. I couldn't get a clear photo... my camera has no zoom to speak of... but it was cool enough nonetheless to mention it. :)

Vancouver Collaborative Photo Project: Aerial Photo Tagging @ Flickr!

By kk on January 25, 2005 - 11:39pm

From the Vancouver Group forum over at Flickr!...

here's collaborative aerial map
of vancouver, which i made so that i could geolocate some images i took
when i visited in may. by clicking on the areas under the tacks you can
'zoom' in. then you can add notes to those images with the text format
[photo]flickrimageID[/photo] and your images will appear whenever
someone clicks "expose photography locations"

it is a bit awkward interface wise but it is really a lot of fun.

because i've opened up the images so that anyone can add notes, you can
all tack your own images taken around vancouver to the map.

if anyone finds this project interesting and wants to add a bunch of
their own images onto the map, i'll consider adding more detailed
sub-maps for Gastown, kitsilano, west van, downtown and any other place
you'd like to tack down an image..

.. but what would really be awesome is if someone else with the keyhole
software could fill out the rest of the map ~ i'm busy working on a
comprehensive collaborative map of toronto

CD Duplication and Screenprinting

By kk on November 22, 2004 - 7:03pm

Hi there. Has anyone worked with a local CD duplication and printing shop before they'd recommend?

I'm working on getting 1000 CDs done with 4/4 color inserts, tray cards, and screenprinting. Would love any suggestions you may have.

I found some cheapies online... but would love to use someone local if they can price it competitvely.

Thanks,

kk+
