“WordPress: state of the art semantic personal publishing platform

ready to blog?

By compulsive on June 16, 2006 - 2:09pm

Is "Blogger" or your current blog host, just a little to conformist for you?

Are you ready to try an application that gives you absolute control over every aspect of your blog?

It's time you tried WordPress.

What is WordPress, and how do I use it?

Today will begin a series of posts on WordPress, why it is an
excellent choice for a personal website and how to install and use the
application. Today everyone benefits by having a
personal web space. Whether it is a place to organize your friends for
parties and club nights, or a place to generate a portfolio for job
networking. The one problem with personal web space, is the fact that
it usually lacks the user interaction that makes a personal space
enjoyable and ultimately more interesting.

CSS mastery ..

By compulsive on June 16, 2006 - 12:10pm

I read a really good book for all the css users out there, it was
the type of book that is absolutley packed with real workable solutions.

Not only are the solutions workable, but it also contains some of those tricks that you always wonder about.

I dont believe in Flash for mainstream websites, I think it has a
lot more use on Graphic Design Company’s homepages than anything else.
Why? It is horrible for a lack of support for user accessibility.
Technical users obviously never have a problem with flash, its kind of
like a MS Windows network tech. saying that he never has a problem with
his machine. “DUHH

Well I am back.

Despite being smote by the web gods, I have returned
in an attempt to replace and reorganize months worth of posts and

I bet many of you noticed the latest article @ wired about researcher David Baker at the University of Washington, but did you really think about sharing your idle resources?

A lot of us, me included, get a little sucked in sometimes when it
comes to computers and the speed of our processor vrs. the speeds we
actually need, and we end up buying the best we can afford and then
only use it to its maximum potential 30% of the time. I have a last
generation Mac with dual 2.7 processors and I know this feeling all to
well. Well now you have a chance to actually use that extra horsepower,
your dual processor, dual core, or whatever and also receive some
credit for the good you are doing for the world. “The World?

Friday at last ..

By compulsive on May 26, 2006 - 4:45pm

the following is an exerpt from www.compulsivedesign.ca, the daily blog of Compulsive Corey.

Howdy all, welcome to friday @ compulsivedesign.ca

I wanted to talk a little about podcasts and video-casts today. I have had several emails about podcasts, and why I would want to do a videoblog-cast instead of a podcast or audioblog-cast.

Podcasts really became a huge hit in 2004, and last year 2005. The iPod now has about 80% of the market share of digital music players, and it was a clever way to share the net in an audio format.

I think for me this is a real focal point. We want to share our
internet experiences with others, its amazing really that the internet has become so socially intertwined with our culture. What lightning fast acceptance and integration the web has made into our lives. We want to “share

template crash & and a call for artists

The following is an excerpt of my blog @ www.compulsivedesign.ca

Vancouver is just such a great city that it is hard to decide how to
focus on just one neighborhood. But that is what I have decided to do with the "ShareTime" video-blog feature. We will be focusing on what is new and cool, in developing vancouver area's. There is the Yaletown area which has probably doubled in the last 3 years alone. There is the Commercial Drive neighborhood, known for its organic produce, italian culture, and earthy feel. The list is almost endless and we are going to feature something special about all of them. It may take more than 1 v-blog edition to capture the essence of a neighborhood, but thats ok right? We have plenty of time, no rush.

You are attached to something special about your neighborhood, why don't you "share" with us? Let me know why your neighborhood is the best area in town, and I will take your recommendations and turn them into a special vancouver report.

On a related note, I have a special affinity for the Vancouver artist. Since I decided to take my love of images, and theatre, and turn it into a business (whether its editing footage in Final Cut Pro, or promoting my digital still photography) the hardest part, is inviting "others" to share your passion. Lets face it, the people who we want to share our passion with, are the select few who are willing
to pay us for what we do. How do we find those people? In fact there are entire industries that support artistic endeavors, how can we get enough exposure and reach the people that count? Well I want to help in any way I can.

re .. give it all up .. ?

By compulsive on May 24, 2006 - 11:08pm

The following is an excerpt taken from my blog @ compulsivedesign.ca, it is the sorted details of a quacky interview with a shady company that presents itself as serving the public trust.

Be sure to check in next month as we begin our video series on Vancouver called "Share Time".

Well the "meeting" has come and gone and even though I am embarrassed to admit it, I so totally got taken with this one.

For those that were tuned in last entry, I got a phone call from a
man named "Chris" who got my information from Monster.ca. I post there
looking for Final Cut Pro editing gigs. Anyway he wanted to know if I
had ever thought about changing my profession entirely.

Although I wasn't really interested I was very curious, I wanted to
know what it was that "Chris" was offering, and I was (ridiculous I
know) a bit flattered that he had called with this "opportunity". He
works for a Company called Primerica,
they advertise themselves as a Company intent on saving the masses from
debt. He originally told me that they were an investment management
company so I was betting that it was a real chance at something.
The "hook" was that he had worked at IBM and that he knew how tough it
was in the Computer Industry, and he had never looked back after he had
left for this great opportunity.

give it all up .. ?

By compulsive on May 23, 2006 - 11:24pm

Hi all, welcome this is a post from one of your Vancouver Blogger Neighbors.

I blog @ www.compulsivedesign.ca and will be beginning a full video feature in June.
I will be attempting to dual post, as soon as I talk with the powers that be here to find out how,
but in the meantime I have included today's post for your consumption.

I received an interesting call today, from an investment company
currently seeking managerial staff. The gentleman who called "Chris"
asked me if I had ever thought about trying something new. It seems
that he used to work for IBM and left for a managerial position at the
unmentioned firm, and keeps his eye out for other computer workers who
may fit the same bill. He saw my posts on Monster.ca for Final Cut Pro
contracts and decided that he should give me a call, now first off I
must say that he sounds like a super nice guy. But would I ever just
give it up to try something totally new? Would you?

There have been many times in my career, one that is slowly starting
btw, that I wondered if I just shouldn't go and do something else. It
never really stuck though, 1 because I love fcp editing and 2 because I
have so much $ invested in computers and software that it just seems
crazy. But this seems to be something that a lot of professionals do in
their middle 30's, they just pickup and do something totally diff.
