Floorball Team Canada GM visits Vancouver

By rightantler on October 7, 2006 - 11:53am

xpost from www.stewart-marshall.com

Every Monday night (except statutory holidays) I've been going to the Roundhouse (Pacific & Davie) to play Floorball (6pm-7.45pm). Greg Beaudin has organised this and after a quiet summer, participants are growing to a very healthy core, a core which includes almost as many women as men. I of course lack that background playing 'Ice' Hockey but that doesn't stop me making a contribution on Monday nights. There's something special about being a new immigrant to Canada and getting the chance to plat a sport involving a hockey stick!

Last night was a big night as Harry Hannelius, the GM of Team Canada came along during a brief visit to the city. Harry had some great words to share and then took over officiating for us. You can read more about Team Canada at Canadafloorball.ca and find more info at Greg's site floorballhockey.com.

I encourage you to try this game. It is high-tech indoor hockey which is faster, safer and more participatory than you may realise. It's also played by over 3 million people and is one of the fastest growing team sports in the world. For $5 come to Roundhouse and join us!

Beauty not the surroundings

Moose-ing uploaded by Right Antler.

So I was walking a street in part of the city I barely know and hardly ever visit. Some of the houses oozed charm, even history. Some were very very charming, many though were sad, tired and dark. In amongst this mix I found flowers and suddenly remembered this was not about houses, it was about people. At that point the sun came out ....

Wall Art

Moose-ing uploaded by Right Antler.

Down in Chinatown a local business takes the opportunity to demonstrate it's long history by way of a mural. I'm not sure if Kitty's Beauty studio has been around very long, but the Mural suggests the story starts in China back in the 1860s, going through various historical flashbacks to the Canadian flag of the current day ...

Philosophy and observation

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed. It is the only thing that ever has.

This on the side of a restaurant on Main Street make me wonder whether the restaurant lives up to it's billing!

Words of a Tall Story?

Moose-ing uploaded by Right Antler.

Main Street words on a building. Clever how the words make a dull building appear more interesting and forget it's dullness. Maybe this applies to people - the more words the more interesting? Or does talking too much merely hide a grey and dull facade?

Foyer of the Seymour Building

Moose-ing uploaded by Right Antler.

It's interesting to note how bulding owners tend to maintain their stunning foyer/lobby but frequently let the rest of the building deteriorate. One of my favourite buildings is the Chrysler Building in New York, where the lobby is fantastic - strangely though the public are not allowed to see more! I wonder ...

Roof Garden

I love going to different buildings and different floors. This was from the 7th Floor of the PWC building. The result an un-noticed roof garden that is quite simply, Splendid! ...

The Big Picture?

Moose-ing uploaded by Right Antler.

The Time & Gold Building has some interesting public art. Normally the 'big picture' is a little bit more contemporary. It's one of those things that should have featured in an earlier Moose-ing - I finally remembered to take the shot! ...

Baby Tank

Moose-ing image uploaded by Right Antler on flickr

Now here's a site I didn't expect to see. As a Gen-Xer in the UK I was taken to numeous miliary museums, open days and other events. There is something incongruent about seeing a tank and cannon on the sidewalk here. I'm not sure if it's the only tank in the city, these days the countless Hummers are bigger than this one! ...

Blurred Skyte

Sitting as I am [or rather was] in the Bryght office with Boris and Sarah I could not pass up the opportunity to blog a blurred picture of a Skyte (Skytrain) in honour of Roland who is not here ...
