Gastown Graffiti Project

By Will Pate on October 20, 2005 - 8:56am

In an alley one block east of the Harbor Centre, between between Richards and Homer, running parallel to Hasitngs.; there is an impressive graffiti project underway. The artist, Gabe, told me that it was a city funded project. He is doing some amazing work, with a hip tribute to the likes of Escher.

The City of Vancouver has quite a few of these as part of its a mural program which is in turn part of the graffiti management program, even with annual competitions.

24 Photos of Vancouver

By Will Pate on April 21, 2005 - 12:14am

Photographer Christopher DeWolf produced a series of 24 photos of Vancouver for UrbanPhoto. As a newcomer stuggling to understand the pulse of the city, I found his descriptions of the neighborhoods insightful.

Vancouver is so young and haphazard is it best described by its contrasts: condos next to drug ghettos, grimy alleys overshadowed by pristine mountains. It is a city of glass towers but also a city of wet brick and puddle-filled alleys...Vancouver is hard to define. Hopefully these photos offer a vague outline of this green-grey jewel.

Do You Need a Jacket in Vancouver Today?

By Will Pate on March 23, 2005 - 12:57am

If you're like me and new to the city, it can be often hard to figure the answer to the age old question "Do I need a jacket today?" Well now there's a website called Do I Need a Jacket? that does the work for you.

They even have results from 3 weather reporting stations. So whether you're downtown, in Richmond or West Vancouver you'll always know if you need a jacket and why.

Saying "Thanks" on the Bus

By Will Pate on March 8, 2005 - 10:29pm

What's the origin of saying "Thanks" to the bus driver when he drops you off at your spot? The tone of voice for some people suggests habitual recitation, yet it still sounds genuine.

I've never had this experience before on public transit in Toronto, Mississauga, Halifax, Orlando or Memhpis - only Vancouver.

Is it just a delightful social practice that spread virally? Was there some campaign to increase friendliness between drivers and passengers?

Are there any other cities that share the habit?

Flyer Girls on Granville

By Will Pate on January 21, 2005 - 5:38pm

What's with the girls along Granville trying to get people to sign or donate to some eco-related cause? Today I was approached by a new one and here's how the conversation went:

Girl: Hello!
Me: Sorry, not interested.
Girl: Well that's because you're not interesting!

How rude! Such a harsh assessment after less than 3 seconds.
