As seating is limited, reservations are recommended. Reservations: cs-science@sfu.ca or 778.782.5466

This talk will focus on the content of Dr. Weaver's recently published book:
"Keeping our Cool: Canada in a Warming World" (Viking Canada). The foundations of the science of global warming will be presented and a discussion of our present climate will be framed within a historical perspective of the Earth's climate over the last 650,000 years. The range of projections of climate change over the next century will be summarized and the public confusion arising from the media portrayal of the science and its entry into the political arena will be discussed. Finally, how the Kyoto
Protocol and other potential international policy options fit within the framework of necessary actions required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will be reviewed.

Bio
Dr. Andrew J. Weaver is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in climate
modelling and analysis in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University
Everlasting Light

Start: Oct 17 2008 - 8:00pm

End: Oct 18 2008 - 8:00pm

Everlasting Light
Music for choir and marimba, featuring percussionist Anne-Julie Caron
Friday, October 17, 2008 at 8:00pm & Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 8:00pm
Ryerson United Church (2195 West 45th Avenue, Vancouver)
$26/$22

Anne-Julie Caron, one of the most sought after percussionists in the country, has become well known for her unique flair, stylish brilliance and polished sound. On October 17th & 18th she joins the Vancouver Cantata Singers for two evenings of spirited music for marimba and choir. This concert will highlight Everlasting Light, a stunning 40-minute work for choir, marimba, bells and tuned crystal glasses by Juno award winning Canadian composer Christos Hatzis.

Also on the bill is the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by local composer and Cantata Singers choir member Kristopher Fulton entitled Fireflies. About his new piece, Fulton writes:
“I began to write Fireflies after seeing a photograph of a group of fireflies taken over a thirty-second exposure in the early evening. The resulting effect I can only describe as the most beautiful display of random streams of light frozen in the evening air. I asked myself... what would that sound like?”

Canada Ocean Lecture - Lament for a Nation's Oceans

Start: Oct 22 2008 - 7:00pm

End: Oct 22 2008 - 9:00pm

A lament—a passionate expression of grief or sorrow. A fair depiction of how one might feel about the state of the oceans? Unduly strong? Overly pessimistic? And does a lament necessarily imply irretrievable loss? Or can it identify targets for politically supported, scientifically defensible strategies for conservation and recovery? Since the extension of the Exclusive Economic Zone to 200 nautical miles, a single human generation has passed during which Canada’s oceans have experienced unprecedented biological change. The Atlantic has borne witness to the Atlantic Cod. The iconic Pacific salmon and Canada’s largest fish (Basking Shark, White Sturgeon), all of which depend on the coastal waters of BC, are imperilled throughout much of their respective ranges. The Arctic, no longer a refuge from the environmental detritus of socio-economic ambivalence, is home to culturally and biologically integral species, such as Polar Bear& Beluga, that are increasingly threatened with extinction. Biological depredation of the waters bordered by the longest coastline in the world ultimately reflects ineffectual leadership &disingenuous commitment to environmental sustainability. There is a clear need to replace governmental & societal lip service with meaningful responses to over-exploitation, habitat alteration, and climate change.

Heritage Hall (3102 Main Street, Vancouver)
Bar opens at 7:00 PM. Concert at 8:00 PM. Bar stays open afterward. All ages welcome.
Tickets $25 ($15 students) Call Tickets Tonight at 604.684.2787 or click on www.ticketstonight.ca.

“Tanya Tagaq ... is an Inuit throat singer, although whole-body singer is more like it. And soul singer, in any sense you might care to think of that term.” - LA Times

Primal, erotic, experimental, Tanya Taqaq is hailed as the “Jimi Hendrix of Inuit throat singing” (David Harrington, Kronos Quartet) and “like Edith Piaf or something, totally emotional” (Björk). Her innovative, solo style of throat singing pushes the boundaries of emotion and expresses the primitive instincts that still reside deep within our flesh. To open Music on Main’s Main Series, Tanya joins forces with cellist Cris Derksen and DJ Michael Red for a concert that will leave you breathless.

Donkey or Elephant?: The Impact on Canada after the Circus Ends

Start: Oct 30 2008 - 11:45am

End: Oct 30 2008 - 1:30pm

As Barack Obama and John McCain formulate their policy platforms, Canadians need to pay keen attention to the candidate’s views. Beyond American priorities, what are the current bilateral issues that will determine the shape of the Canada-U.S. relationship?

Key questions surround the future of NAFTA, the thickening border, energy, trade and environmental policy, as well as homeland security and defence. Where do Obama and McCain stand on these topics, and what will the reverberating effects of their policies be across the border? Canadian interests hang in the balance as we wait to see who moves into the White House.

Dr. Moens is a professor of international relations at Simon Fraser University. An expert in American foreign policy, he has published numerous books and articles on American presidential decision-making, as well as North American and European security issues.

Join us for a timely and informative discussion!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Location: Fraser Institute Boardroom
Street: 4th Floor – 1770 Burrard St.
