DEAD Serious

February 29, 2008 at 7:30 p.m.
Hamilton-Harron Funeral Home and Vancouver Memorial Services and Crematorium
5390 Fraser Street, Vancouver
FREE Reservations Required, call 604-325-7441

Please note: FEBRUARY 10th and 15th PERFORMANCES CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS

Emotional weight and societal strictures make death a fertile field for art, the medium that allows us to speak the unspeakable. A kind of "anti-Valentine", DEAD Serious tackles this most profound, yet taboo, subject – our own mortality – through a musical (and literal) procession: from fear and fascination, to acceptance and peace, with stops at murder, black humour, sex, and survivors along the way.

Acclaimed musicians Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa (piano) and Heather Pawsey (soprano) dig into mirthful and macabre music in an array of works by Canadian and international composers (Leila Lustig, David McIntyre, Jeffrey Ryan, Rodney Sharman, Gabriel Fauré, John Harbison and Francis Poulenc, among others) – plus world premieres by Canadian composers Chris Sivak and Robert Ursan – in this funereal, yet funny, foray.

A performance space installation by noted artist S.D. Holman will extend meditations on mortality with photo-based artwork and an interactive altar to which audience members are invited to add their own mementos of their dead.

How it Works presented by Touchstone Theatre and Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad

By Cynnamon Schreinert on February 20, 2008 - 4:33pm

Feb 29 2008 - 8:00pm
Mar 8 2008 - 8:00pm

Touchstone Theatre and Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad presents the Western Canadian premiere of Daniel MacIvor’s play How it Works, directed by Touchstone’s Artistic Director Katrina Dunn. Al (Andrew Wheeler) is a cop whose teenage daughter (Anna Cummer) is hitting the drugs hard. It's not an ideal time for dating, but after a messy divorce from Donna (Katharine Venour), he needs a new start. Christine (Kerry Sandomirsky) arrives in his life with an antidote to all things ordinary, and some strange medicine for the girl with the angry heart. In this delicate puzzle of a play MacIvor approaches the family with characteristic honesty and inventiveness. The picture that emerges combines deeply human moments with East Coast humour and a surprising rethinking of themes we know well. Touchstone’s production brings some of Vancouver’s finest actors and designers to the interpretation of this important new work.

"…heartfelt, funny... beautifully crafted drama."
— The Chronicle Herald, Halifax

”…wise, witty and warm family drama, shot through with insights about the human condition.”
— The Toronto Star, Ontario
