Western Front (303 East 8th Avenue), Vancouver
Ticket Info: $15/$10 students, seniors and artists- available at the door
More info: www.vancouverpromusica.ca

Vancouver Pro Musica presents the Canadian debut of Tokyo-based virtuoso performers Curtis Patterson, koto and Bruce Huebner, shakuhachi featuring an eclectic collection of original compositions and arrangements by the duo including: Going Home, a simple dance-like melody with Celtic influences written by Curtis Patterson; Daha (Breaking Waves), a traditional Japanese piece played by itinerant monks while gathering alms; and an arrangement of After the Rain by legendary American saxophonist and composer John Coltrane.

Both Patterson and Huebner have been living and studying in Japan for over 20 years, and describe their sound as a “fresh musical outlook” for the koto (13-string zither) and shakuhachi (bamboo flute). In March of 2007 they released the CD Going Home to critical acclaim. “Patterson and Huebner's music demands to be performed on Japanese instruments even as it is sometimes ‘Western’ in feeling and not confined to Japanese traditional forms or scales. Patterson’s koto rings out like an ancient wagon court zither and Huebner’s shakuhachi moves freely, complementing the simple palette” - Hogaku Journal, Japan.

The Art of Food

By Amanda Nicole on January 8, 2008 - 4:29pm

Jan 8 2008 - 7:00pm
Jan 16 2008 - 7:00pm

The Art of Food, Concourse Gallery, Emily Carr Institute, is a curated exhibition of food-related artworks shown in conjunction with a panel discussion, lecture and films.

The show features artists who are ECI alumni, graduate and undergraduate students, whose work deals with food in its imagery or as its medium. As varied in approach as they are in subject matter, the works explore the intricate and diverse nature of the impact of food on our lives, revealing ways in which it influences our relationships with environment, health, politics, science, beauty, safety and security.
