Experience the picturesque heritage atrium of the Sinclair Centre Mall in downtown Vancouver as it shimmers with the reverberant sounds of the Tempest Flute Choir, a 10-member ensemble that will perform while spatially positioned around the room.
Repertoire for this concert will consist entirely of new works written especially for the unique acoustic and architectural features of this performance space. Don’t miss the innovative new music of Canadian composers Rose Bolton, Derek Charke, André Cormier, Anna Hostman, Chris Kovarik, James B. Maxwell, Greg Newsome, Jordan Nobles, Benton Roark and Carl Winter.
The Tempest Flute Choir is led by acclaimed musician Mark McGregor, described as a “mind-blowing flautist” (Victoria Times Colonist) who performs “with tremendous flair and intensity” (Globe and Mail). Since the ensemble’s inaugural concert in 2005 (Birds in the Atrium, Vancouver Public Library) the Tempest Flute Choir continues to perform in unconventional venues.

In a space renowned for the strength and diversity of it’s visual beauty, it might be hard to imagine your other senses taking over… but they will. On the evening of March 14th The Kamloops Art Gallery, currently hosting the exhibit Art and Society in Canada 1913-1950, will touch your ears and your eyes by bringing Canadian visual art and contemporary music together.
Surrounded by the works of Canada’s best-known artists from the first half of the twentieth century, three members of the Kamloops Symphony will perform a concert of live music from living Canadian composers.
Violinist Cvetozar Vutev, pianist Naomi Cloutier, and clarinetist Sally Arai are all members of the Kamloops Symphony in addition to having active careers as chamber musicians and soloists. The trio will present an evening of music by composers Don Ross (The Weather Inside), Imant Raminsh (Aria for Violin and Piano), Gerhard Wuensch (Ménage à Trois: Deux Morceaux), Alan Gilliland (Suite from the Sound) and William Wallace (Trio Concertante to the Verderhr Trio). This video conference takes a critical look at the current situation in Kenya, examining the role of the Diaspora, the media, and the international community in effecting meaningful change. The goal of the dialogue is to foster greater understanding of the issues pertaining to Kenya's current situation and explore possibilities for meaningful change.
The conference will bring together contributors from the African Diaspora, scholars, Canadian government officials, representatives from mass media, and local and international community members. Invited guests include guest speakers from Africa, North America, and Europe.
The dialogue will address issues and representations of the current situation, including alternative perspectives, the current role and potential contributions of the Diaspora, and recommendations for action. The Addiction Services, Public Education Series, is a community service of Vancouver Coastal Health. This program is free and open to anyone who is interested in addiction, alcohol and other drugs.
There are 6 sessions, 1) what is addiction, 2) drugs and the body, 3) recovery, 4) family issues, 5) helping others, 6) drugs in our society-a public health approach to drug control. Participants who complete all six sessions will receive a certificate upon completion. This ongoing program occurs every Friday morning from 9:30-11:30 on drop-in basis, no registration is required.
