On April 11th, 2008, special guest artist Nicole Mitchell, arguably one of the world’s top jazz flutists, joins spoken word artists Mercedes Baines and Kedrick James along with the NOW Orchestra for an evening of truly inspired music making. The NOW Orchestra, led by saxophonist Coat Cooke, features some of today's most important voices in Canadian improvised music. This concert will highlight new works by composers Paul Plimley, Nicole Mitchell and Coat Cooke as well as new spoken word compositions by Kedrick James and Mercedes Baines.

One of the most sought-after jazz soloists and composers in North America, Nicole Mitchell is based in Chicago where she is a vital part of the local jazz and improv scene. She has appeared on five new recordings in just over a year, both under her own name and in collaborative projects, and has won DownBeat Magazine’s Rising Star Award three years running.

Sonic Boom 2008: A Festival of New Music by BC Composers

Sonic Boom takes place April 10-13, 2008 at the Western Front in Vancouver (303 East 8th Avenue). Now in it’s 21st year, this festival is widely regarded as one of Canada's most important showcases for new work, including pieces by both mature and emerging composers, all performed by top-quality ensembles and soloists.

The Ensemble in Residence for Sonic Boom 2008 is Nu:BC, a cutting-edge performing arts collective that brings together the talents of the UBC School of Music faculty and other outstanding Vancouver creative artists. Directed by Paolo Bortolussi, the ensemble for Sonic Boom will consist of acclaimed musicians Cris Inguanti on clarinet, Corey Hamm on piano, Eric Wilson on cello, David Harding on viola, and Paolo Bortolussi on flute.

The Composer in Residence for Sonic Boom 2008 is Christopher Butterfield, a composer and professor at the University of Victoria.

Join us three times a week for 4 weeks for our total body workout with boxing drills, core ab exercises, interval training, and more! Never the same workout twice with our programming and lots of variety to keep all fitness levels challenged.

The Addiction Services, Public Education Series, is a community service of Vancouver Coastal Health. This program is free and open to anyone who is interested in addiction, alcohol and other drugs.
There are 6 sessions, 1) what is addiction, 2) drugs and the body, 3) recovery, 4) family issues, 5) helping others, 6) drugs in our society-a public health approach to drug control. Participants who complete all six sessions will receive a certificate upon completion. This ongoing program occurs every Friday morning from 9:30-11:30 on drop-in basis, no registration is required.
