DAVIE DAY STREET FESTIVAL

By WEBIA on August 23, 2010 - 2:58pm

Sep 11 2010 - 11:00am
Sep 11 2010 - 8:00pm

A carnival like atmosphere will see music, dance, food, circus, and heritage themed attractions highlighting the much anticipated Davie Day Street Festival. Four blocks of Davie Street from Burrard to Broughton Streets will be closed to vehicular traffic all day on Saturday, September 11th.

This exciting family day, named after former Premier Davie, will centre around our kick-off this year for the upcoming birthday - Vancouver 125. An impressive heritage zone will feature old-fashioned lollipops, a photographer taking turn-of-the-century pictures, The Sylvia Hotel, and lots to see and do including animals and blacksmith demonstrations in an authentic historical setting.

In the KidZone there will be circus demonstrations, and you can climb aboard an ambulance, or the fun SS Discovery. Our Doggy Zone will round out the attractions with a guest artist, Eric Ginsburg from New York City, who will create whimsical and waggish portraits of man's best friend.

Dinner & a Movie - Free Outdoor movie series

By WEBIA on June 16, 2010 - 1:40pm

Jul 7 2010 - 9:00pm
Jul 29 2010 - 11:00pm

For the second year running, the West End BIA will be hosting the outdoor “Dinner & a Movie” series at Ceperley Meadow (near Second Beach in Stanley Park) throughout July 2010. The free movies will start at dusk, but it is recommended to be there as early as possible to ensure a good spot in front of the giant inflatable screen.

This community event gives people of all ages the opportunity to enjoy their movie favorites in a natural setting under the twinkling canopy of the stars. It’s pure summer fun to lay on a blanket or sit in a comfy lawn chair and laugh, cheer or ‘oooh’ at the following family friendly movies:

Showing Details
Wednesday, July 7: Mamma Mia! (2008)
Wednesday, July 14: The Goonies
Thursday, July 22: Monsters vs. Aliens
Thursday, July 29: Karate Kid (Original)

Visitors are encouraged to dine-in or grab take-aways from one of the fantastic West End restaurants before the movie starts and should keep an eye out for dinner specials! The pleasant surroundings make a great open air picnic environment.

In the event of rain the events will likely be rescheduled for another night.

Featuring recipes from 25 West End eateries and culinary hotspots, the book champions local businesses and community spirit while drawing attention to food security issues. Author Wendy Walsh, who began the project with Cook the Hood: Commercial Drive in 2008, explains: "These books celebrate the people and the flavours that set a neighbourhood apart, while helping those without access to nutritious food."

The brainchild of Vancouver entrepreneur Wendy Walsh, Cook the Hood Publishing produces cookbooks with a difference. Each edition features culinary secrets from neighbourhood restaurants and other gustatory hotspots. Proceeds benefit Quest Outreach Society and local food security organizations. The series includes Cook the Hood books for Commercial Drive, the West End, and Kitsilano. Future editions will feature Gastown and Whistler Village.

House of KOSA

Oct 1 2009 - 8:00pm

Fashion: the best theatre in the world

TigerMilk present their grandest production yet, a dystopian tale of the last haute couture label in the world: House of KOSA.

House of KOSA by Miranda Huba is set in a visually fantastic world of celebrated craftsmanship. Loaded with cultural significance, it sets out to undermine our relationship to both fashion and the media.

A chorus of models, moonlighting as seamstresses in a basement sweatshop, unweave the twisted workings of the family that inhabit the House above them. The Mother (played by celebrated dancer/choreographer, Barbara Bourget) is in the attic creating the intricate designs, while devising the future of her family. The Father (Michael Springate) is at the breakfast table encouraging his Daughter (Kirsten Slenning) to recount her latest tale of front page debauchery.

The House runs like a well oiled machine until one Christmas morning the Daughter asks for the head of her Father...

A dynamic blending of Versailles with today’s lip-glossed fashionistas, House of KOSA is a celebration of the poetic, the profane, the poignant and, of course, fabulous taste.
Featuring costumes by cutting-edge Canadian designer Christina Darling, House of KOSA will burst to life under the bold direction of Olivia Delachanal.

Showtime: 8:00 pm (no show on Monday).
