Round One Game Six: Vancouver Canucks 5 Calgary Flames 4 (3OT)

Round One Game Six: Vancouver Canucks 5 Calgary Flames 4 (3OT)

By Richard Eriksson on April 18, 2004 - 12:01am

That was one of the most exciting hockey games I've ever seen. It's definitely in my top 5, and is even possibly the best. For six minutes in the third period the refs put the whistle away and both teams traded chances. But you want to know the funny part? I didn't even see Canuck goals #2, #3 and #4. (Me and a buddy were en route to a restaurant, and we heard about goals #3 and #4 when walking down Robson street, as a roar went up from the various apartment complexes and restaurants with TVs.)

Can you believe the overtime periods though? Gelinas poke-checked by Auld on a breakaway. Niemenen hitting the cross bar. This should have been Calgary's series, but Morrison's goal early in the third overtime (I could barely take the first two after the Flames came back from four goals down to tie it) erupted the restaurant I was watching the game with, it turns out, 6 Flames fans.

Game 7 in Vancouver on Monday. So much for my pessimism, eh?

I saw the first Flames goals, and I turned to everyone else in the room and said "Don't worry, the Canucks still have a good chance of screwing this up". Little did I know how right I was going to be.

It was a good game to be watching.

As soon as they scored the third goal, a buddy and mine concluded that it was locked up, and only more so as they scored the fourth goal. Little did we know we were going to be wrong.
