Dakine and legalized Crack Houses.
This is a story that was big news in Vancouver just a few months ago. I was going through my own personal archives and came across some thoughts I had jotted down on it. These thoughts may appear in some form or other in my second book called "Put Down The Fork" which is a look at fitness, fashion and lifestyle. Whether it makes the final cut or not I hope you enjoy!!!
I live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world Vancouver, British Columbia. We already have liberal pot laws. Though it is still illegal the law tends to look the other way to those who are consuming for personal reasons. Recently a business in our city called Dakine Café Shop decided that they should cash in on the lax laws in our city and they set up shop and started selling pot over the counter. Some estimates had them doing over $60,000 per week. They were claiming they were doing this to help those who need marijuana for medicinal reasons. They claimed their motives were pure and they were simply fighting an archaic law. Now I could care less who partakes in a little pot from time to time. That is your business. But come on people what a load of crap. Eventually the owner was arrested and her followers - The Blue Haired, Dorrito Eating Armada came out in mass to protest this horrible injustice. Arrested - hmmm - didn’t we learn anything from this whole tobacco thing. It is funny smoking cigarettes is pretty much being deemed illegal - can’t we wait a few years before history repeats itself. Does everyone sporting a blue head - have medical reasons for being lazy? I am sure they do. Tip to the Armada. If you want to be taken seriously - conform just a little bit. And really pick a better battle. No one is denying you, your pot. You are in reality just fighting for a greedy Entrepreneur. Is Dakine sharing there profits with you?
I find it odd that some of our Civic Leaders in our beautiful city want to build places for people to ingest drugs. First heroine - give the junkie a nice leather chair and a nurse. Though compassionate if your doing heroine and got yourself a fix - I think your reasoning may be altered a bit and hoping in a cab to get to the injection site might not be priority one. Now they are talking about building safe inhalation sites for crack addicts. We don’t want crack heads and pot smokers to have to do it outside. That might ruin the high. While at the same time we are tearing down crack houses in Surrey. What message are we sending to people. Flip-flop. We already have inhalation sites instead of building new ones why not give the crack addict a 2 zone pass. After all it is called the Sky Train. What a perfect way to get to a crack house.
I personally love the interviews the neighbors of crack houses give. It is 3 in the afternoon and it goes something like this.
Some lady in stirrup pants and with rollers in her hair with 10 illegitimate kids running around in the background says;
“Yeah I new something was up - strange people were coming and going all the time. Yep sometimes people would pull up and leave a few moments later. I am glad it is gone.
