Changes to the Terms and Conditions

Changes to the Terms and Conditions

By Richard Eriksson on February 7, 2005 - 8:19pm

I've made a number of changes to the terms and conditions and would like to seek feedback on those changes.

I replaced "All your posts belong to you." with "Individual authors retain copyright on their postings to the site." to make it sound more active without changing the meaning. I also changed "StreamLine takes no responsibility for your posts." to "Bryght takes no responsibility for your posts." to reflect that Urban Vancouver is a Bryght site.

I changed "Outright commercial ads will not be promoted to the front page (e.g. buy my widget) unless the site moms deem them to be suitably witty :-)" to "The editors will demote (i.e. remove from the front page) outright commercial ads (e.g. buy my widget) or press releases if they appear in blog posts and will not promote them if they are any other type of post. The editors may make exceptions if the post is suitably witty. :)" which means a more active voice than passive, and also to reflect the current policy of automatic promotion of blog posts to the front page. I also removed the item that followed it, just to avoid repetition. It read "Press releases won't be promoted to the front page unless the site moms deem them to be suitably witty :)".

Furthermore, I added the following item:

  • If the editors deem a post or comment to contain solely or significantly text designed to enhance the the search engine ranking of an external site, that post or comment may be deleted without notice. Repeated posts or comments may result in account deletion without notice.

I also took ownership of the page and updated the timestamp on it.

All that said, if you have an existing weblog and would like to cross-post feature-length posts to Urban Vancouver, you are most welcome to link back to the original. A good example of this is Urban Vancouver movie critic Darren Barefoot, who often cross-posts to his personal weblog.

If you feel that the terms and conditions are not enforced consistently, or have comments about them, please post to the feedback forum (or reply to this post) or email us privately via the contact form.
