TODAY! FREE Urban Vancouver Info Session

TODAY! FREE Urban Vancouver Info Session

By Boris Mann on May 16, 2004 - 10:07pm

May 19 2004 - 7:00pm

As Richard mentioned on his Vancouver Webloggers post, we're having a FREE info session today, Wednesday May 19, 2004.

Trees Organic Coffee (450 Granville Street) has free WiFi, so we'll be going through some of the features of Urban Vancouver "live" and in general talking about the site and its goals.

Everyone is welcome, and fancy coffee drinks are on us.

Submitted by Ian Bruk on May 17, 2004 - 10:29pm.

Marc Canter has become my number one weblogger replacing Dave Winer. Through him I hear of Movable Type. Seems to me movement to WordPress or Drupal. Mention of Tucows. Seems like Streamline can answer these questions better than anybody I know. But I can't afford the $50 to go to the meeting. I would like to commit those $50 to Streamline once I earn them.

Hoping I'm still in line for a Gabriola based version of UrbanVancouver I hope the night is enjoyed by all.

Yes, Ian, we still need dedicated people like yourself to run community sites in other areas.

Just to clear up any confusion, I think Ian is referring to the $50 it would cost him to travel from Gabriola -- coffee is on us, and Trees always has free wireless 'net access.

Submitted by Ian Bruk on May 18, 2004 - 9:42am.

I was referring to the cost of coming to Vancouver on the new high speed ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver. Downtown to downtown in 80 minutes it's a pretty nice way to travel.

I was thinking that maybe "Travel" should be a topic on Urban Vancouver. I see it as a topic for Gabriolans. Where to go when you want to get away. I"m hoping to get a digital camera to show some of the beauty of Gabriola at Urban Vancouver.

In fact in thinking about topics I went to the Stats Can web site to see what percentage of household incomes go to what categories (ie Home, Auto, Entertainment etc.). I remember someone talking about Bill Gates and his meetings at Microsoft and he was always concerned with "what's coming in" and "what's going out". As Urban Vancouver flexes its knowledge management muscles I thought this might interest people. Help them reduce what's going out and increase what's coming in.

I am sorry I'll miss the meetup. Hope to hear/read about it oin detail.

These guys know what they are about and provide honest, helpful and frequently amazing stuff. Shame I'm not in town or I'd be at this session.

why urban vancouver is in doubt after 400 posts?

are you guys gonna to quit?

Submitted by Richard Eriksson on May 18, 2004 - 11:48am.

Urban Vancouver is not in doubt. Vancouver Webloggers is. Comment spam, the time spent manually administering the features (much of which can be done easier or by self-selection in Urban Vancouver), and the cool features and format of Urban Vancouver are the reasons Vancouver Webloggers is in doubt. I'm still open to ideas about keeping Vancouver Webloggers alive, but so far I have heard none.

are you guys actually get paid doing this?

Submitted by Boris Mann on May 18, 2004 - 12:24pm.

Urban Vancouver is currently funded by StreamLine. At StreamLine, we are specializing in web-enabling individuals, communities, and businesses through the use of a number of innovative tools.

So yes, we get "paid to do this", in that Urban Vancouver and its features promote StreamLine.

isn't Streamline part of twocows?
this is very interesting. is urbanvancouver part of twocows then?

Submitted by Roland Tanglao on May 18, 2004 - 2:37pm.

Hi Anonymous:

StreamLine and Tucows are totally independent and separate. We are just a Tucows reseller. As Tucows resellers, we resell Tucows Blogware blogs and other Tucows products.

urbanvancouver is then a division of stremline then. i read it is built on drupal. there should be nothing to do with blogware. are i right?

Submitted by Boris Mann on May 18, 2004 - 3:21pm.

Urban Vancouver is not a division of StreamLine -- "just" a project we are working on. Yes, Urban Vancouver is powered by Drupal, a powerful open-source community platform.

And we still resell Blogware blogs. You can, sign up for a 30 day free trial, or you can blog for free here by creating an account.
