Those are at Vancouver Wharves, where I once worked on their
security team, after I retired from my regular career.
Vancouver Wharves has recently been owned by BC Rail, but in
my time there, it was privately owned by its original founders.
Most of that Sulphur is a by-product of the petroleum refining
industry, and comes from crude oil.
At that same terminal, they also handle Potash, which is used
in the manufacture of fertilizers. The terminal also handled
iron-ore concentrates, and pulp from the paper industry,
and methanol, in addition to the more visible Sulphur piles.
Ships visiting the terminal come from all over the world, and
meeting their crew members is an educational experience.
Most of them, fortunately, speak enough English to make a
conversation possible. It was a very interesting job.
One gentleman in England used to phone me almost every morning
to find out if our shipping manager had arrived yet. He never
quite seemed to understand the time difference between here
and there, and I also got early-morning calls from a gentleman
in Japan, because a lot of the pulp we handled went there.
It was quite the job...
