World Urban Forum and Noise Pollution

World Urban Forum and Noise Pollution

By Shane Birley on June 23, 2006 - 10:01am

I believe the World Urban Forum 2006 is a great idea.  This year's event has a great list of speakers, workshops, and performers.  Yet, I have a huge problem with the World Urban Forum.  The main stage with the bulk of the performers is less than 100 yards from my home - and they are LOUD.

Last night, the WUF performances went on until just before midnight - blaring music and screaming fans the whole way.  I am sure people had fun - but, people, don't forget you are in an urban setting with a lot of residental dwellers nearby.  I was kept awake until they were finished.  It sounded like I had a stereo playing in my own home - it was that loud.

Maybe I should call the police and have them shut down the sound at 11pm tonight.  I wonder how that would go over.  Just kidding...

Maybe you should call the cops and report them....
tell them you think there's a riot breaking out.
Or, rent an amplified bullhorn, and fight back.
Get some of those comedy records with sounds of
belches and farts, or howling dogs, and play those.

Reading about that Forum in Barbara Yaffe's column
the other day, she was waxing ecstatic over the
Israeli delegate's statement to the effect that
"tiny Israel houses every Jew who arrives".
One of the ways they do that is by killing off the
original Palestinian inhabitants, from whom they
stole that land. I've known men who were there at
the time and helped them, and they've admitted it.
Not only admitted it, but are proud of it.
And the Americans backed those Israeli "freedom
fighters" to the hilt, and have been propping
them up ever since. That's why there's no peace
in the Middle East. And all the bullshit in the
world won't change the facts. I'm older than the
state of Israel and I know how it got started.
It got started with mercenaries & deserters from the
British Army and other goons with guns invading the
territory and killing off the local residents or
chasing them away. If that's anything to be proud of,
then we need to re-define that term.

I met a few folks from NY on the bus travelling back from work, I they seem nice. Be sure to say hi if you see WUF III delegates walking around with those tags and make them feel at home.
