On November 9, 2007 at 8:00pm Vancouver Pro Musica presents Red Chamber at Ryerson United Church (2195 West 45th Avenue) as part of the Further East / Further West concert series.

Comprised entirely of traditional plucked Chinese instruments, Red Chamber is an impassioned ensemble that spends as much time reflecting on the ancient sounds of the Imperial Court as they do exploring the realms of bluegrass, jazz, and new music. Pushing the boundaries of their instruments, this fiery all-female ensemble performs with unparalleled power and fervor.

Red Chamber is comprised of four of the hottest instrumentalists in Vancouver’s eclectic and culturally diverse music scene. Celebrated virtuosic musicians Mei Han (zheng and liu qin), Guiliana Liu (pipa), Zhimin Yu (da ruan and zhong rua) and Geling Jiang (san xian and zhong ruan) will perform ancient works from the Tang Dynasty, arrangements of Bulgarian and Appalachian folk tunes, new music by ensemble member Zhimin Yu, and a world premiere by Vancouver based composer Craig Day.

The Further East/Further West concert series is a production of Vancouver Pro Musica that aims to involve diverse cultural communities in contemporary music making and provide new opportunities for BC composers to create intercultural music.
