Storyeum mention in June 6, 2004 Miami Herald - Canada's verdant isle comes of age

Canada's verdant isle comes of age from the Miama Herald (free registration required) is generally accurate about Storyeum, Gastown and the rest of Vancouver with the following notable exceptions:
- The Gastown steam clock is cute and quaint but it is a tourist trap and not worth visiting because it's not historical; it was constructed in the 70s!
- It's Lumiere not Lumire.
- Pot is NOT decriminalized yet!
Vancouver was born in 1867 in Gastown, a neighborhood a few blocks from Canada Place that takes its name from settler Gassy Jack Deighton, a river pilot with a fast-running mouth.
Like many similar districts, it slid into seediness but has been restored, and today the art galleries, cafes and boutiques in historic buildings on cobbled streets are a hit with visitors.
You haven't officially visited Vancouver until you've seen the 16-foot-tall steam clock at Cambie and Water streets; it blows its whistle every 15 minutes. Check out the masks at Hill's Tribal Arts store, but be warned: Even in Canadian dollars, the prices are painful. www.gastown.org.
The area is destined for a new surge of popularity, insist tourism officials, when a new high-tech historical-entertainment attraction, Storyeum, opens in June. 800-687-8142; www.storyeum.com
