On Saturday, February 9, 2008 Vancouver Pro Musica will hold an open reading session of works by local BC composers at the Vancouver Public Library Central Branch (350 West Georgia Street) in the Alice MacKay Room. These pieces have been submitted for inclusion in the 2008 Sonic Boom Festival, and have been written specifically for the ensemble in residence Nu:BC. This session is free and open to the public.
A total of 17 new pieces will be read with composers present to receive feedback and comments from the ensemble in an informal and educational environment. The pieces will be split into two sessions as follows:
10am-12pm - Sylvia DeTar, Breaking Echemythia; Yetta Lin, Un-Masquerade; Jordan Raine, The Carnival Mirror; Julio Torres, Phantasms; Jennifer Butler and Kristy Farkas, Stillness/Interference; André Cormier, Nihil obstat
1pm-5pm - David Litke, Ficelles; Jeff Corness, Sketches from “Jonah”; Craig Day, Coastal; Katherine Graff, Outside In; John Kastelic, Prelude; Ed Jin Wook Paik, Clap; Jordan Nobles, Teleidoscope; Russell P. Unfreed, An Evening Stroll with Claude; Ryszard Wrzaskala, Daisy; Eva Carolina Tidlund, Three Movements; Dubravko Pajalic, Little Suite
Nu:BC is a cutting-edge performing arts collective that brings together the talents of the UBC School of Music faculty and those of Vancouver’s outstanding creative artists. Directed by Paolo Bortolussi, the ensemble consists of flute, clarinet, piano, cello and viola.
Sonic Boom is an annual festival of new music by BC composers. This festival is widely regarded as one of Canada’s most important showcases for new work, including pieces by both mature and emerging composers, all performed by top-quality ensembles and soloists. Sonic Boom 2008 will take place at the Western Front (303 East 8th Avenue, Vancouver) from April 10-13.
