On Monday, June 30th at 8:00pm, twelve composers share their inner reflections on outer space in Cosmophony - a concert of solo piano pieces inspired by the beauty and mystery of our solar system. Acclaimed pianist Rachel Iwaasa, widely known for her bold and innovative performances, takes the stage of the intimate Star Theatre in the HR MacMillan Space Centre to present a dynamic solo recital unlike any other. The concert takes place in darkness, punctuated by stunning celestial images projected onto the overhead panoramic screens of the theatre.

This event will feature world premieres by some of Canada's most distinct creative musical voices. Nine composers will present their unique meditation on a specified planet, in a musical portrayal of our solar system with new works by composers Rodney Sharman (Mercury), Marci Rabe (Venus), Alexander Pechenyuk (Earth), Jocelyn Morlock (Mars), Chris Kovarik (Jupiter), Jeffrey Ryan (Saturn), Stefan Udell (Uranus), Jennifer Butler (Neptune) and Emily Doolittle (Gliese 581c. Newly discovered, April 2007).

Opening the evening is Denis Gougeon’s brilliant homage to the sun entitled Piano soleil (1990) from his series Six thèmes solaires. Jordan Nobles’ Fragments (2001-2004), a group of sparkling miniatures depicting the asteroid belt, will appear appropriately between the presentation of Mars and Jupiter. The evening will end with George Crumb's Makrokosmos II: 12 fantasy pieces after the Zodiac.

"My contribution to this project, Saturn, will be my first solo piano work, which will fill a major lacuna in my catalogue and allow me to take my craft in a new and previously unexplored direction. As well, the subject matter for this work connects beautifully with my lifelong interest in astronomy, giving me another level of inspiration." - Jeffrey Ryan, composer
