BC Interior Jazz Artist Of The Year Olga Osipova To Serenade Vancouver At The Cellar Jazz Club August 13th
By noodlehead_prod... on July 20, 2009 - 12:06pm
Russian-born jazz sensation Olga Osipova is bringing her beautiful slow silken jazz and sultry velvet voice to the Cellar Jazz Club, 3511 W. Broadway, on Thursday August 13th. Joining Olga – piano/vocals are musicians Bryn Flock on guitar and Bernie Addington on bass. Doors open at 8:00pm, performance at 8:30pm, tickets are $17 at the door.
After the launch of her all-original debut CD “Velvet & Lace” things started happening fast for Olga. Only a couple months after the Canadian release, the CD has already topped the smooth jazz charts in her native Russia, was added to rotation on many radio stations in Canada and across the world (USA, Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, France, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands, Poland etc.) Olga’s music is receiving rave reviews from the press including the prestigious JazzTimes Magazine; she won the Jazz Artist of the Year at the BC Interior Music Awards in 2008, and most recently, Olga was announced Finalist in the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards. She is currently available for interviews and public appearances upon request.
Olga’s story is quite unique; after living in two different countries and going through two immigrations, she chose Canada as her home and music as her career.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Olga grew up in a musical family. Her uncle, a famous concert pianist, recognized her talent from an early age and made sure that Olga received classical piano lessons from the best instructors in the country. At fourteen, she was already an accomplished pianist, winning awards and performing complex arrangements well beyond her years.
As she became more fascinated with the art of composition, she began writing instrumental pieces, later adding lyrics to her compositions, as her skill improved.
A passionate student, Olga felt like she needed to expand her writing beyond her first language and completed a Masters degree in Linguistics. Now fluent in Russian, German and English, she moved to Germany and continued her performance career and musical training at Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg.
It was in Germany that Olga joined a popular jazz a-cappella group Point 7. She toured Germany and Switzerland with Point 7, performing for crowds of 500+ people. At that time, Olga began to write in German; soon her original song "Wieder und Wieder" ("Again and Again") was receiving local radio play, with Olga's voice and musical style being compared to the late, smoky Marlene Dietrich.
From Germany Olga moved to Canada where she released her debut CD in July 2008. She performs regularly for her fans and music lovers world-wide and continues to enchant audiences from British Columbia to Russia, and many points in between.
“Absolutely stunning album...This is a warm melodic and haunting sound that mesmerizes the listener. The album is moody and engaging subduing the listener into its spell binding style... A breath of fresh air albeit a sexy sounding breath of fresh air... More than Smooth Jazz and more than just a Jazz album, this is in a class of its own...” – Peter Meritt, Music Manager, PBS 106-7 FM Melbourne Australia
"...Much as Madeleine Peyroux naturally evokes a hazy, retro vibe haunted by the ghost of Billie Holiday, Osipova spontaneously suggests the luxuriant smolder of Marlene Dietrich. But Osipova does the iconic screen siren one better. Again rivaling Peyroux, she proves herself an excellent songsmith, crafting a dozen consistently fine tunes that extend from the coy playfulness of “Don’t Forget About Love” and arch lustfulness of “Come and See Me Alone” to the bruised longing of “Unavailable,” murky wistfulness of “St. Petersburg” and gentle, romantic swirl of “Wieder und Wieder” ...Perhaps a porcelain-skinned newcomer who evokes images of dimly lit Berlin cabarets from a long-faded era may not have the makings of wide appeal. Then again, it hasn’t exactly kept Ute Lemper in obscurity." http://jazztimes.com/articles/24640-velvet-lace-olga-osipova - Thomas Conrad, JazzTimes Magazine, May 2009
“If you like smooth jazz with smoky, romantic lyrics- this is a delicate treat you can’t ignore.” - John Kereiff, BC Musician Magazine
Jazz guitarist Bryn Flock hails from Vernon, B.C., and is a recipient of the 2008 Vancouver Coastal Jazz and Blues Society Scholarship.
A bassist since the age of 13, Bernie Addington has been a respected player in the Vancouver music scene for a long time, working with top local and international artists, and touring North America. A resident of the Okanagan, Bernie is one the B.C. interior’s most sought after musicians.

As a child in her native St. Petersburg, Russia, Olga Osipova was afforded some of the best instruction in classical piano, with the hopeful expectation of her famous concert pianist uncle that she would follow the same path. When Olga was asked about her musical history this was her reply. “Yes, I have an uncle who is a famous concert pianist in Europe, and this was his vision for me.” Did Olga share that vision? She takes a breath and says, “I think, that I didn’t have a choice. Since I was 6 years old, that is the only thing I knew.” When it was suggested that she led a bit of a charmed life as a youngster, she continues to share her thoughts, “Maybe, but there was pressure that not many kids experienced. I feel I didn’t have a childhood, because there was always this pressure to be perfect, to perform. It was good in that you got to learn so much from really great people, but at that age,” she tapers off, “at that age maybe you need a little less of that.” A recession is never fun, and the doom, gloom, fast cash, and general air of degradation and decay
