Chor Leoni - A Great Service

By BCcat on August 8, 2014 - 10:54am

Nov 8 2014 - 7:30pm

The 22rd annual Remembrance Day concerts.
With special guest reader Christopher Gaze, O.B.C.

Amidst the chaos and brutality of war, soldiers also consoled and cared for each other. Robert Service witnessed these unsung acts of compassion as a WWI volunteer ambulance driver. A Great Service places his harrowing stories alongside musical selections by Gustav Holst, Vaughan Williams, Paul Mealor, and Rupert Lang in this beloved Chor Leoni Remembrance Day tradition.

This concert is supported by a major gift from Rob McAllister and James Emery, in loving memory of Shirley McAllister.

Chor Leoni presents the E Stuudio Girls' Choir (Estonia)

By BCcat on July 6, 2013 - 8:54pm

Jul 22 2013 - 7:30pm
Jul 22 2013 - 9:30pm

Chor Leoni met Estonia’s award-winning E Stuudio Girls’ Choir last year at the Seghizzi Choral Competition in Italy, where we competed together in the final Grand Prix. A choral friendship was formed and we are delighted to present them in concert in Vancouver. Chor Leoni will sing an introductory set before turning the evening over to our dynamic and entertaining guests.

E Stuudio Girls’ Choir was founded by Külli Lokko in 2006. The choir’s repertoire was supplemented by a cappella choral music of classical and sacred pieces by contemporary Estonian composers. Today, Estonian choral music has an important place in E Stuudio Girls’ Choir repertoire. The Concert Choir has performed throughout Estonia as well as in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria, Germany, France and the United States of America.

Indiekör: indie-rock songs & choral classics

By BCcat on February 5, 2013 - 5:24pm

Apr 12 2013 - 7:30pm
Apr 13 2013 - 9:30pm

Mixing Monteverdi with The Magnetic Fields, Ron Sexsmith with Rautavaara, and Arvo Pärt with Arcade Fire, Indiekör by the Coastal Sound Youth Choir returns with a boundary-pushing choral playlist of indie-rock and choral classics in a high energy mix on April 12 & 13 at Christ Church Cathedral, 7:30pm.

This year’s Indiekör - expanded to two performances due to demand - features brand new arrangements from an array of Western Canada’s foremost arrangers and composers. The award-winning Coastal Sound Youth Choir will bring their dazzling sense of stylish musicality to works by Fleet Foxes, Woodpigeon, Feist, Hey ocean! and more. The 68-member choir is well known for incorporating choreography, movement, and unexpected surprises into their performances to delight and engage their audiences.

Last year Carrie Tennant, one of Canada’s brightest choral conductors, wondered what would happen if she took the indie pop and rock songs her singers listened to, added in the choral music she loved, and performed it all in Vancouver’s beautiful Christ Church Cathedral. That first Indiekör performance became one of the hottest tickets in the city; the concert sold out and 250 people were turned away at the door. Clearly, Tennant had hit upon a winning combination.
