IDENTITY
Centre A, the Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, is a non-profit society and a federally registered charity. It is a member of the Canadian Museums Association and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.

MISSION
Its mission is to connect people, art and ideas, bridging the local and the global. Centre A provides an ongoing evaluation of Canada's cultural diversity and its role as an Asia Pacific nation. Participating in a global network, Centre A enjoys an international reputation for excellence and innovation.

PROGRAMS
Centre A operates a 500 square metre exhibition space in downtown Vancouver, where it operates programs in the following areas:

contemporary art
exhibitions, performances, conferences, publications, residencies
library and learning programs
outreach to community partners and peer organizations
mentoring opportunities for students and youth.
sending Canadian artists abroad
organizing contemporary art tours to Asia
engaging a wide diversity of people at the local,
national and international level

HISTORY
Centre A began public programming in 1998 and opened its first exhibition space in 2000. Sustained support from private donors helped the centre to grow quickly and within five years it was also receiving operating grants from three levels of government. In 2005, the organization moved into to the historic BC Electric Building, a large space with high visibility at a key downtown intersection.

The gallery is located in one of Vancouver's oldest and diverse downtown neighbourhoods, situated between Gastown and Chinatown, and within walking distance of many other active art spaces. An attempt is made to connect the artistic program to the life of this interesting and rapidly changing area.
